Last night, a small group of students headed to City Winery NYC to see Paris Combo live in concert. What a memorable show!
For those unfamiliar with the group, their music is an eclectic mix of sounds, influenced by cabaret, gypsy jazz in the style of Django Reinhardt, 1930s French pop, North African rhythms, and swing.
We were fortunate to have seating right in the center of the room at a long table directly in front of the stage.
After ordering some food and drinks, the lights went down, and then the music started. The audience was instantly captivated by the mesmerizing voice of lead singer, Belle du Berry, brilliantly accompanied by Potzi on guitar, François Jeannin on drums, Emmanuel Chabbey on bass, and the multi-talented David Lewis on bugle, piano, and trumpet.
The concert was a fantastic mix of old and new material. We loved hearing some of our favorite songs, including: « Moi mon âme et ma conscience » from the group's self-titled debut album, Paris Combo (1998); « Living Room » from their eponymous second album, Living Room (2000); « Attraction » and « Fibre de verre » from their third album, Attraction (2002); and « Aquarium » from their fourth album, Motifs (2005).
Students were equally excited to hear new songs, such as: « Je te vois partout » and « Lux » from Paris Combo's latest album, 5 (2013).
